"The whole hotel is currently closed down, not only because of the power cut but also because of the uncertainty of power restoration," said Jeffrey Tan, the general manager of Rizqun International Hotel.

Jeffrey told The Brunei Times that guests staying at the hotel have been relocated to a number of other places such as the Sheraton, Riverview and Orchid Garden Hotel.

"They will be moved back here once the power supply is restored," he added.

When asked about the loss, Jeffrey said that a proper figure could not be estimated at the time, however he added that the hotel occupancy could reach up to 70 per cent during the festive season as compared to the normal 40 per cent.

"I don't think normal business can resume until late next week," added the disappointed general manager of the 168-room hotel.

A representative from another well known hotel which was also affected by the power cut voiced similar opinion.

The duty manager who opted for anonymity said that she anticipated large loss of revenue not only because of the temporary closure of the hotel but also because kitchens which provide food for their staff are no longer in operation.

"We now have to buy food from outside which can be really expensive, considering the large number of staff that we have," said the duty manager.

She added that a majority of the guests at the hotel have been relocated but there were still a few who had opted to stay despite the inconvenience.

"Some of them are refusing to leave because they are already used to the rooms here, so we have prepared staff members to constantly check up on them."

One of the hotels that catered to the relocation of these guests was the Sheraton Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan.

According to Sales Executive Riz, a majority of their current guests were actually the Brunei populace who had decided to stay at the hotel for the sake of convenience and comfort as their homes are currently facing blackout.

She said that the hotel occupancy is now at 80 per cent as compared to only 40 per cent before the power cut took place. When asked if she were worried about the influx of guests from foreign countries visiting the Sultanate for the Chinese New Year celebrations, she replied she anticipated no problems as she was confident that the 140-room hotel would have sufficient rooms.

According to a representative from Bon Asia Travels, some 1,000 tourists from countries such as China, Vietnam, Taiwan and Hong Kong are expected to visit Brunei in the time span of approximately 10 days, beginning from yesterday till February 2.

She went on to assure that there will be no complications in accommodating these tourists as 80 per cent of them have been scheduled to stay at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.
